Something changes the human ear on long passages; it becomes ultrasonic. As a result I’ve had a hard time sleeping. I can hear a wind shift, a slacking jib sheet or even loose parts in one of the lockers. It has come in handy once or twice, but most of the time it just keeps me awake.
A few nights ago it happened. It was about 2:00AM and I awoke to the sounds of mass activity in the cockpit above. It sounded just like an America’s Cup crew fine-tuning a racing yacht; several adjustments were made to the mainsail, and the jib was being hauled tight. I stuck my head through the hatch and asked if all was well. “Oh hi, everything is fine, go back to sleep,” replied the single-handed crew above.
I went back to bed and fell into a deep sleep with a comforting smile, knowing one simple truth: I married the perfect woman.
A Simple Truth
